Run'n'gun shooter Mighty Goose is reminiscent of timeless classics like Contra and Metal Slug, but is the online game from the developer Friv2Online website worthy of being called the successor to cult titles? We tell in the review.

Meet Mighty Goose - a brave mercenary who travels across different worlds and fights against dangerous opponents. He will have to challenge King VOID, the conqueror of the galaxies, who has flooded many habitable planets with his minions.

In fact, this description is enough to explain the plot: as usual for the genre, the script is rudimentary and of little interest. After all, in run'n'gun games, we're not going for an exciting story, are we?

And here's what it's worth buying the Mighty Goose for - excellent shooting. The friv game constantly throws the gamer into skirmishes with superior enemy forces, and the enemies of the rod from all sides and differ in behavior: some throw grenades from afar, others try to get closer to hit, others fly and shoot the hero, and so on. Four hits - and the goose turns into a roast, and the player rolls back to the control point. By the way, they are not always well placed, and in some cases, after the defeat, you will have to watch the cut-scenes again.

Fortunately, the hero has a lot of weapons at his disposal: a starting pistol, which is always with him, as well as a pickup machine gun, shotgun, energy cannon, rocket launcher. You also need to collect ammunition for them on the battlefield, and, if necessary, order their delivery from a courier: coins that fall out of opponents are spent on this. And by filling the scale of rage, the protagonist will temporarily increase his attacks.

In addition, partners will help in battles: it can be a chicken that lays explosive eggs, a pig, in whose pockets there are always a couple of clips for a machine gun, a raven attacking opponents with razor-sharp wings, and so on. To unlock companions, you first need to save them: some you get in the story, others you have to look for in secluded places.

One of the significant drawbacks of Mighty Goose is associated with partners. They are controlled by AI, but if desired, a second player can take control of them. And be disappointed: they do not have such a wide arsenal of weapons and attacks, and therefore your partner will get bored very quickly. In fact, the game's local co-op feels useless, and you shouldn't buy it for the sake of co-op.

Traveling through the worlds, on foot or in vehicles (there is even a section with a flight on a jet fighter), the goose destroys crowds of ordinary opponents and bosses. The battles with the latter are not inventive, but you can’t call them boring either: it can be a regular battle in the arena or, for example, a chase in the spirit of Mad Max. There is no choice of difficulty level in the game, but only boss fights threw me a tangible challenge.

In between tasks, you can delve into the arsenal: choose a partner, set passive perks, such as faster movement or accumulation of a scale of rage, and also take one of the active abilities into the next battle - for example, throwing a bomb, slowing down time, or the usual quacking - does not give no effect, but it sounds funny.

Mighty Goose looks good - with classic references and distinctive style. The friv game is beautiful, but in the hottest battles, all the elements of the picture are mixed into an unreadable mess, because of which you can accidentally miss an enemy projectile. This is not good for a shooter where you only have four lives.

However, I can not call it a serious flaw that can spoil the passage. Mighty Goose is a great four-hour retro shooter that you will surely enjoy spending a couple of evenings in.
